Publication Date: February 7, 2023
ISBN: 9781728239231

Disclaimer: I received a digital advanced reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis from Publisher: Keira must decide if she should use her ability to contact ghosts to help the man who once tried to kill her.

Hunted and haunted, all she wants is to put her mysterious past behind her and move forward with her new friends as Blighty Graveyard's groundskeeper. But then she receives an invitation to dinner at the local recluse's crumbling ancestral estate. The mansion is steeped in history that is equal parts complicated and bloody―and at its center is the man who once tried to kill her, now begging for her help.

Dane Crispin believes his home is haunted―and that the unquiet dead clawing through the ancient house are after him. Unnerved but intrigued, Keira opens her second sight and discovers he's right: resentful specters cling to Dane…and if she can't find a way to stop them, threaten to consume everything in their path.

There's something dark happening in the world beyond most peoples' vision, and if Keira isn't able to sever the ties between the living and the dead, the chained spirits may not be the only things twisted beyond saving.

Review: The Twisted Dead is the third installment in the Gravekeeper series by Darcy Coates, and once again, Keira is up to her eyeballs in both ghosts and trouble.

The story starts when Keira finds a mysterious invitation on the doorstep of her arson-damaged cottage in the graveyard of small town Blighty. The mystery deepens when she reads the invitation and discovers its from Dane Crispin--town recluse and the man who shot at Keira when she inadvertently strayed onto his property while trying to help a troubled ghost. Her friends, Mason and Zoe, have also received invitations to a dinner party at the Crispin Estate. From the moment the friends enter the Crispin family home, ghosts are literally coming out of the woodworks in this truly twisted tale. Throw in a road trip, an evil corporation masquerading as a renewal energy power, a murderer, some morbid humor, and a pleasantly dorky cat, and The Twisted Dead quickly turns into a horror fan's kind of party.

Even if you haven't read the previous books in this series (The Whispering Dead, The Ravenous Dead), you'll like The Twisted Dead if you love paranormal thrillers and gothic-style ghost stories. Followers of the series will find this a great addition that answers some of the questions raised in the previous books as well as new ones that will quietly eat at your soul until Book 4.

Book Review: Decoding the Stars by Allison Scott

Title: Decoding the Stars

Author: Allison Scott
Genre: Astrology - Divination - Spirituality
Publisher: Wellfleet Press Copyright 2023
Publication Date: January 3, 2023
ISBN: 9781577153290
Read: January 4, 2023
Disclaimer: I received a digital advanced reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis from Publisher: Find harmony between your self and the cosmos. In Decoding the Stars, examine the details of your birth chart and discover your soul’s true purpose through astrology.

Astrological archetypes are highly fluid and subjective in nature and your personal relationship with them can change over time. While we may look to our zodiac signs to help us navigate our relationships, career, finances, and family matters, astrology can also help us align the personality and the soul.

You may have already learned how to interpret the external influences through astrology—the paths your life may take, who you will make friends with and love. Now’s the time to find what’s inside you. This guide will help you understand your desires, skills, and unique talents and guide you toward identifying your purpose and motivation.

With this book, you will awaken self-knowledge and awareness of your larger spiritual planetary influences. The more self-aware you become, the greater your possibility of finding inner peace and happiness. With a walk through your birth chart, reflective questions, and writing prompts, Decoding the Stars will help you to better understand your creative spirit and bring your life’s purpose to light.

Review: Decoding the Stars is an in-depth guide to discovering what makes you...you. Even though the book isn't as lengthy as some on the subject of astrology, Allison Scott packs a lot of information into 240 pages.

The reading is quick, especially because Scott has a conversational tone to her writing, so the reading is more like having a conversation with a knowledgable friend. However, the self-reflection isn't as quick or as easy, and in all honesty, it shouldn't be, which is one aspect of Decoding the Stars I especially liked. I've read plenty of astrology books that tell you how to interpret a birth chart, but not so many that have encouraged true self-reflection or given the option to work with what resonates and then leave other aspects alone.

Many of the books I've read have given an "all or nothing" presentation to the zodiac and the aspects of each sign--meaning, either accept everything about a sign even if it doesn't truly fit you as an individual or continue to feel as though something is missing. Scott doesn't offer a hardline black and white view but rather shades of gray. For example, as someone who has a Sagittarius Sun Sign, Capricorn Moon Sign, and Aquarius Rising Sign, I haven't always felt 100% in line with everything surrounding my Sun Sign. Thanks to Decoding the Stars, I now have a better understanding of why I've felt this way as well as a better understanding of not only who I am as an individual but why I'm drawn to some of the interests and hobbies I've had.

Overall, Allison Scott has produced a solid and unique book for anyone interested in astrology, especially from a personal point of view. The charts are detailed and make for easy reference. The illustrations compliment the writing. Decoding the Stars is a great addition to the growing field of astrology books available today.

Book Review: The Untamed Witch by Lidia Pradas

Title: The Untamed Witch

Author: Lidia Pradas
Genre: Witchcraft - Spirituality - Magic
Publisher: Fair Winds Press Copyright 2022
Publication Date: October 4, 2022
Read: December 30, 2022 - January 2, 2023
Disclaimer: I received a digital advanced reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis from Publisher: Personalized magick is the most powerful magick. The Untamed Witch empowers you to use your own instincts, intuition, and personal environment in your witchcraft.

Witchcraft is not one defined, arbitrary path. Rather, it is a diversity of practices that you can curate and align with based on your lifestyle and unique gifts. Moreover, those practices are not meant to be done the same way by every witch. Someone else’s love spell is how they conjure love. Why use lavender in a ritual if it isn’t native to your surroundings or you simply don’t like it?

This guide gives you the insight and tools to undomesticate your craft from formulaic—to inspired—practice.

The Untamed Witch also outlines:

  • Tools and practices to access the subconscious
  • How to work with the life, death, rebirth cycle
  • How to use elemental and land witchcraft
  • Ancestry work and communicating with spirit guides and entities

With this book at your side, learn to use your instincts to rewild your magick.

Review: I loved this book! Finally, someone has written a book that isn't filled with formalized rituals, complicated spells, and endless lists of exotic supplies. I cannot express just how happy it made me to read The Untamed Witch by Lidia Pradas because in my own practice as a solitary Witch I prefer to keep things simple and uncomplicated, using what I have on hand or can easily source in my area versus relying on complex, multi-step rituals that leave me exhausted from the setting up of everything before the rite even begins. If you like uncomplicated witchcraft, this is the book for you!

The Untamed Witch is aimed at the solitary practitioner but could easily be modified for use in groups. Pradas states that the main premise of the book is to "access your power without intermediaries," and the chapters are divided and presented in such as way as to encourage the reader to explore not only their self but their local environment. Why use an herb that grows in a desert environment when you live in humid coastal area? "Rewilding" your magick--as Pradas calls it--is all about working with what you have available in your area in order to maximize your magick.

Filled with history, lore, charts, tips, and so much more, The Untamed Witch dares the reader to harken back to the days when the wise women and men utilized their talents and their local environment to craft their magick. The world needs more magick, but it doesn't need more complexity. Lidia Pradas has given us both, and this is one book I know I'll be referring to again and again.

Synopsis from Publisher: Stop chasing sleep and start welcoming rest with these 365 peaceful, nighttime meditations to help you fall back to sleep with ease.

Many familiar tales and legends have tended toward the belief that the moon has an impact on us both physically and metaphysically. Legends aside, we learn in school that the moon has control over the ocean’s tides, as well as many other elements and creatures on earth—so why would humans be exempt? The moon is more than its beautiful exterior. As a spiritual entity, it is known to have control over your emotions, mental health, and sleeping habits. With that in mind, Moon Meditations opens the opportunity for you to explore your spiritual connection with Luna.

Book Review: The Wheel of the Year by Rebecca Beattie

Title: The Wheel of the Year

Author: Rebecca Beattie
Genre: Wicca - Witchcraft - Spirituality
Publisher: Elliott & Thompson Copyright 2023
Publication Date: February 1, 2023
Read: January 1, 2023
Disclaimer: I received a digital advanced reader copy from the publisher via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis from Publisher: Rediscover nature’s cycles through the Wheel of the Year: a celebration of eight key moments within the turning seasons – from solstices to equinoxes and those midpoints in-between.

The Wheel of the Year allows its celebrants a moment to pause and still the chaos of modern life every six weeks, to observe what is happening in nature and to reflect on the turn of their own lives.

This nurturing new guide is an exploration and celebration of the Wheel of the Year – from Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain to the Spring Equinox, Midsummer, Autumn Equinox and Yule. Our expert guide, Rebecca Beattie, traces the cycles of nature and the rhythms of the seasons, exploring enchanting traditions and folklore for each celebrated moment.

This book is alive with what is happening in the nature and in ourselves, offering tools and rituals to rediscover and appreciate each seasonal festival, to pause and reflect. It will connect you to the wheel of your own life, allowing its readers to explore and chart the turning of their own seasons alongside the cycles of the natural world.

Review: Rebecca Beattie introduces the Wheel of the Year by delving into its history, which is surprisingly recent as it was created by a merging of ideas originally conceived by Ross Nichols (Father of Modern Druidry) and Gerald Gardner (Father of Modern Witchcraft) in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then, the wheel has gained wide acceptance in pagan communities and even in the larger mundane world as a way to mark the seasons.

Each Sabbat is given its own chapter: Midwinter/Yule, Imbolc/Candlemas, Spring Equinox, May Eve/Beltane, Midsummer/Summer Solstice, Lammas, Autumn Equinox, November Eve/Samhain. The amount of information Beattie includes for each holiday ranges from history, folklore, rituals, recipes, crafting ideas, and tips/suggestions for marking the days in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, which isn't something I've seen often in books that cover the topic of the Wheel as most available to me tend to be Northern Hemisphere-centric.

Overall, The Wheel of the Year is a great addition to any Witch's or Pagan's library. Written in an easy-to-read style, the information isn't hard to follow, and yet the amount of research Beattie has obviously done on the subject is on full display, making this a good reference for anyone looking for more in-depth information regarding individual Sabbats and the Wheel of the Year as a whole.

Those techniques are incorporated in creating a diverse array of animals, including a panda, monkey, kangaroo, tiger, cat, goat, hedgehog, owl, crow, fox, deer, snail, butterfly, seal, duck, flamingo, and more. Even complete beginners will feel confident in their skills to draw any animal in a cute style. Review: Who doesn't love cute animals? Why settle for photos when you can create your own illustrations? Yasmina Mattson presents a step-by-step guide for drawing a full menagerie of cute animals, and it doesn't matter if you're an experienced art or have never picked up a pencil with the intent to drawing anything until now. Her easy writing style and fully illustrated how-to instructions make it super easy to not only learn how to draw basic animals but gives you the tools to explore and create your style.

I really liked that Mattson begins with the story of how she came into her own style of drawing. She then gives a list of supplies and techniques she uses but encourages the reader to find what works for them. While Mattson mostly works with watercolors, if the reader prefers colored pencils and markers or pastels and ContĆ© crayons, it's no problem. The techniques demonstrated in the book are easily translated to any art media.

Mattson breaks down the art of drawing "cuties," as she calls them, into three simple steps: 1) Observe 2) Play 3) Refine. Each of these is then further broken down with exercises to build confidence. She also covers additional information such as "The Rules of Cuteness," adding accessories and clothing, backgrounds, body shapes, dynamic poses, and storytelling.

You Can Draw Cute Animals packs a lot of information into 128-pages as well as plenty of vibrant illustrations that are educational as well as inspiring. If you've ever wanted to learn the art of drawing cute animals, Yasmina Mattson offers a book that should be at the top of your must-have list.
