Review: I've been a fan of The Addams Family since childhood when the original black and white series aired as reruns in the afternoons after school. This was followed by The Munsters, so my budding black goth girl heart was in a twisted kind of heaven. Since then, I've committed every show and movie regarding The Addams Family to memory. So you can imagine my excitement when I learned Netflix would be reviving my favorite creepy and kooky family with a special emphasis on my favorite character: Wednesday.

To say I harbored some doubts about the new show is fair. After all, Christine Ricci's turn as Wednesday was flawless and a thing of beauty to watch on the big screen The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). Then I learned she would be appearing in the Netflix series. Color me intrigued. 

Wednesday faces her colorful new roommate, Enid.

Any doubts I had about Netflix's handling of one of my most beloved childhood memories faded the moment Jenna Ortega appeared on the screen as Wednesday Addams. Her deadpan delivery of lines, ability to be both humorous and creepy, and overall presence as Wednesday was *chef's kiss* perfection. Not to mention the killer dance scene at Nevermore's Rave'N left me in stitches. 

The show focuses on Wednesday and her trials and tribulations at Nevermore, but the supporting cast isn't without a huge degree of talent. Gwendolyn Christie (Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as Principal Weems, headmistress of Nevermore Academy and Morticia's old roommate, and absolutely nails the role. Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago, The Mask of Zorro) and Luis Guzmán (The Taking of Pelham 123, Narcos) are stellar as Morticia and Gomez, and of course, Christina Ricci is awesome as "dorm mom" Marilyn Thornhill, the only so-called Normie at Nevermore. This is only to name a few of the talented actors fleshing out the ranks of Outcasts and Normies in the small town of Jericho.

Wednesday, for all the dark humor and teen angst, is still a murder mystery, and the twists and turns are sometimes subtle and sometimes sharp. I've stated before on this blog that I often am able to figure out the Who in a Whodunnit fairly quickly. However, that was not the case with Wednesday. Just when I thought I'd solved the mystery, the plot shot in a different direction and left me questioning my own sanity. If you like dark gallows-style humor and twisted murder mysteries, then you'll love Wednesday.

Each day is giving its own dedicated page with information regarding personality, destiny, life path, karmic lessons, and secrets to help each individual along their path. Each day also includes a short list of celebrities who share the birthday as well as a place to record the names of family or friends born on that day. There's also a quote that sort of summaries or resonates with the energy of the day. The illustrations are vibrant and definitely lend a mystical feel to the book. While interesting, the information provided is fairly general. It's obvious the authors pulled inspiration from astrology and other sources to present the entries. However, to gain a fully developed picture other sources of astrology should be consulted. Anyone interested astrology will find The Karmic Birthday Book handy as a place to record birthdays as well as discovering some insights into specific days.

Review: My first love was--and always will be--art, and I studied studio art before making the switch as an undergraduate to English/Creative Writing. When I'm not reading, I'm usually parked in front of an easel or drawing table with paints, pencils, pens, and whatever else currently holds my attention. The World of Urban Sketching certainly held me attention with its vibrant representation of artists' work from around the globe and impressive array of tips and techniques.

Urban sketching is basically the art of capturing a snapshot of time from direct observation through the use of different media, whether is be pencil, ink, crayon, paint, or a blending of materials. No one style is dominant and all artistic forms of expression are welcomed. In the introduction of the book, Stephanie Bower lays out the "manifesto" of the urban sketchers, which simply says (in a nutshell) that the drawings/paintings are created on location, serve as a record of time and place, individual styles are cherished, supported, and shared online, but most importantly, urban sketchers "show the world one drawing at the time." 

The wide variety of artists from around the world showcased in this book will certainly inspire anyone who is looking to expand their knowledge of landscape art. With tips and techniques shared from many of these same artists, even someone who is new to the art form will be impressed with the depth of knowledge found in these pages. The World of Urban Sketching has definitely earned a place on my art book shelf, and I'm sure I'll be referring to it often as I continue to hone my own style.

Review: J. T. Patten is a former government intelligence and special mission advisor, and it clearly shows in his writing. Whispers of a Gypsy is more than a horror story. It's both a historical in its scope and contemporary in its tone. It's both a spy thriller and a commentary on modern society. It's both a "whodunnit" and a supernatural horror show. It's a blend of genres, beholden to none, and I loved every page of it.

The plot is complex and spans decades from the horrors of Auschwitz and Josef Mengele to the modern-day Chicago suburbs. It touches on both Jewish and Romani folklore with references to both dybbuk and golem legends and even blends a little Shelley's Frankenstein and zombies into the supernatural aspects to create a truly unique version of an anti-hero. Told in alternating timelines of past and present as well as multiple points of view, the overall effect is a dark tale rooted in historical fact with far too plausible outcomes.

Whispers of a Gypsy is a thought-provoking novel that treats one of the most horrific episodes of human history with care and the reverence it deserves while also spinning a yarn of contemporary fantastical horror and international intrigue. Any fan of dark fiction will be delighted by J. T. Patten's work, and I look forward to his next book.

Review: I don't often review cookbooks, but I am happily making an exception for Nourishing Vegan Every Day by Amy Lanza. OMG...I want to cook up every single recipe in this book! Over the past year or so, I've been steadily transitioning to a fully vegan diet--no small feat when living in small town Mississippi and the term "vegan" is often misunderstood as meaning "those little green guys from Venus" or maybe someone hailing from Las Vegas. Either way, telling someone you're vegan in Mississippi means they'll more than likely look at you as though you've sprouted two heads. Thankfully, there are a plethora of cookbooks on the market catering to the vegan/plant-based lifestyle.

Amy Lanza's dishes in Nourishing Vegan Every Day are hunger-inducing. (My stomach began growling almost instantly!) Using simple, easily sourced ingredients each recipe seduces the reader/cook to try it. What can be more simple than whipping up a batch of overnight oats? Easily when provided multiple variations? And the Vegan Eggs Benedict...oh, honey. Eggs Benedict have been a favorite of mine since my dad introduced them to me when I was a teen. Now I can have a vegan version of them? Yes, please! From breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner to desserts and more, every page is filled with mouthwatering recipes and bright, colorful photos you'll want to lick because they look so amazing. (Gingerbread Layer Cake, I'm looking at you, and you, too, Salted Caramel Cookie Dough Ice Cream...)

Review: I've reviewed several astrology books in the past couple of months, and The Magic of Astrology is one of the better books I've read. It's not a long or difficult read (only 176 pages) but is packed with lots of useful information. Unlike some authors, Allen doesn't spend time explaining how to create or interpret a birth chart, and instead focuses on the individual zodiac signs. Each sign is provided with information on ruling planet, compatibility with other signs, health, careers, and a lot more. Handy charts make it easy to reference and cross-reference everything Allen packs into these pages. If you're looking for a quick-reference guide to the zodiac, this is the book for you.
